KIOSH 2013 – placing an emphasis on occupational health and safety

The annual KIOSH exhibition and conference dedicated to occupation health and safety will take place at Astana's Korme exhibition centre on 25 and 26 April. Kazakhstan officially supports the International Labour Organisation's World Day for Safety and Health at Work, and KIOSH will again open with a minute's silence in memory of those killed or injured while working.

Government-level participation in the event shows the focus on occupational health and safety - speakers at the KIOSH opening ceremony will include Aset Isekeshev, Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Serik Abdenov, Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as Chairman of the Board of Kazakhmys Eduard Ogay and others.

The KIOSH Conference features leading figures from around the world speaking on occupational health and safety. This year the list includes: Philip Bates, Senior Policy and Technical Advisor of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health; Dr Aliya Kosbayeva, National Professional Officer of the WHO; Anatoly Skalniy, General Director of UNESCO's microelements institute; Hartmut Reinke, Director of Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa at DuPont; Igor Rakhimov, Director of the HSE Department at Kazakhmys; Gulsara Edilbayeva, Sustainable Development Managing Director of ENRC; and many others.

A range of health and safety solutions for sectors such as oil and gas, mining and metallurgy, chemicals, energy, transport and construction will be presented at KIOSH. Speakers from 3M, Tengizchevroil, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (Kazakhstan Railways), and Tenre-Airlife will be among those discussing safety issues in mining and metallurgy, oil and gas, and the railway and transport sectors.

The plenary session of KIOSH 2013 will look at National Policies with Respect to Occupational Health and Safety, with a new format of three sessions dedicated to innovation and international experience, products for individual and collective protection, and training and consulting in occupational health and safety. Day 2 of the conference will feature company masterclasses: from Kazakhmys on energy resource isolation; Kazzinc on health and safety leadership training to form a positive company culture; and DuPont on sustainable approach to operations risk management.

The KIOSH 2013 exhibition will feature 43 companies from Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine.

The awards ceremonies for the Korgan and Senim competitions will also take place. The Senim competition, held by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, consists of three categories: Best Security Company of the Year, Best Occupational Security Service, and Best Occupational Safety Engineer. The judging panel of the Korgan competition, meanwhile, includes Kazakhstani government officials, independent experts, and industry associations.

By combines the efforts of government bodies, business, and public organisations, KIOSH 2013 will help to reduce injuries at work, cut the risk of accidents at hazardous production facilities, minimise damage to the environment and society, and increase productivity.
